Going to Barcelona with Mobility on my Mind

As a California native who grew up near the beach I like to say that I run on salt water and sun. So when December hits, I can’t think of a better place to be than the wonderful city of Barcelona with the sea breeze coming off the Mediterranean keeping me going. That’s why I’m so happy that we are returning to Barcelona for HP Discover again this year, and it’s looking to be bigger and better than ever. I’ve been working with the Mobility team on a lot of the planning and there is just some great stuff going on in this space. Be sure to check out all my sessions and everything HP has to offer in the mobile space! I’ve jotted down some of my thoughts as we get ready to head for the Med once again and continue the Enterprise Mobility journey.

‘BYOS’ Should Replace BYOD

I learned a lot of things at Mobile World Congress this year from the various vendors and exhibits. The quality of the information I gathered was top notch, but the most interesting discussions came outside the venue. Whether we were on a break or out to dinner, we were discussing the future of mobile.

Don’t be overprotective about BYOD

If you are a parent today, you live your life in fear. Everything needs to be sanitized with 99.7 percent anti-bacterial soap to protect your kids from the germs that surround us. The corporate world isn’t much different in their thinking  when it comes to Bring-Your-Own-Device (BYOD) policies. We have security and IT executives who are scared to death that viruses from the outside are going to walk in on their employee’s smartphones and attack their networks.

Mobilizing on the Med – HP Discover Barcelona

It seems like just yesterday I was on a plane back from Las Vegas after our last HP Discover, and I can’t believe Barcelona is now just around the corner! What I think is even more exciting is that in just that short time I’ve seen the mobile landscape change again. With the launch of the HP Chromebook, the Nexus5, the iPhone 5 (s and c). Too many new changes to count, oh and don’t get me started on the new companies, the mergers, the latest technologies, and it’s only been 5 months.

All this is just making the idea of heading out to Barcelona and meeting customers and industry peers to talk about what HP is doing in the mobile space that much more exciting. For the uninitiated, HP Discover is our big event we hold twice a year to showcase what we, and our partners, are doing. Attendees get to experience the latest hardware, software and services in a fantastic venue on the Mediterranean.  ( I have to admit, I’m going to be doing my best to sneak out and hit the beach. But,  I think I’m going to be pretty booked up.)

Currently I have four different sessions/panels that I’m going to be a part of.  I would love you to come join me at one or all of them as we discuss everything there is to discuss about mobility in the enterprise. Discussions will range from our own journey in HP IT to the entire enterprise mobility landscape. There’s a little something for everyone.

A Great Weekend for Mobile Hacking

HP Anywhere Hackathon

I’ve been working in the Bay Area for the best part of the last almost 20 years and I’ve seen a lot of things come and go. I remember the days when Craigslist was simply run by Craig Newmark out of his loft in the city and he’d throw parties to bring together everyone working on the web. I also remember when we discussed merging our Web Development firm with a company that did WAP development back in 1999.  A lot has changed since those lofty days of the Internet Boom and we experienced quite a bust after that period. But as everyone knows, the Silicon Valley is based on a bust and boom, bust and boom economy. This is  not because we create bubbles, but because we create. And when we create the world takes notice.

Real Men, Quiche and the Hybrid

Real men don’t eat quiche. Don’t they? It took the quiche industry years to recover from those 5 little words. Our society constantly pits people/places/things against each other and HTML5 v Native is no different. Can’t we all just get along and realize that there is a time and place for everything. I for one, truly enjoy a nice quiche Lorraine after my Saturday morning hike right before I go for a nice glass of Pinot Noir (notice it’s Pinot Noir, not Grigio, as real men cannot eat quiche and drink Pinot Grigio in the same day, that’s just a known fact). It’s time people realize that you don’t have to choose one camp over the other, there is a time and a place for HTML5 and a time and place for Native development, don’t let anyone tell you differently.

Is 2013 Ready for HTML5?

Sometimes it takes a while for something really good to catch on. Take for example the critically acclaimed TV show Arrested Development. This show was filled with a great cast, good writing, was smart and was funny. The critics loved it but the American public, hmm not so much. Maybe it was the lack of laugh tracks, or people just didn’t want to have to think about their comedy, regardless the show was dropped from network TV after 3 seasons. Now after a 6 year hiatus, the show is being resurrected by Netflix. So what does Arrested Development have to do with mobility? Well nothing, however, it got me thinking about HTML5 and how 2013 may finally be the year that it truly finds its footing and gets the respect it deserves.

Looking back on the last couple of years, HTML5 was poised to take over everything.

Trends for Mobile Workers (What are they asking for?)

This is a great infographic that shows the current trends in what mobile workers are looking for. The infographic comes from a CNN Money article that discusses some of the  Forrester Research results. The really interesting here is the 32% percent that would like to see their next work tablet run Windows. With offerings like the ElitePad, HP should be well positioned to take advantage of this.  Would love to hear people’s thoughts on how this research reflects what you are seeing or thinking.

Tizen – A Death Blow to All but Android?

Welcome to 2013 and the next chapter in the mobility wars. Next up to the plate, Tizen. Now I know many of you will be saying “hey Tizen isn’t new to the game, it’s been around in one incarnation or another for years now.” While that may be true, this looks to be the year when it breaks out of the open-source basement and hits the streets as a real contender especially now that Samsung spokesperson has confirmed to CNET “that the company plans ‘to unveil competitive Tizen devices within this year.'” With the mobile market really being a two-horse race between Apple and Samsung at this point, that’s a big deal for the market.
